Understanding the Risks of Liposuction

Monday, December 31st, 2007

By Ricardo Silva Liposuction is one of the more popular plastic surgeries given the heft of most Americans. As with any surgery, there are risks you should understand Understanding the Risks of Liposuction When you decide on having liposuction, or any plastic surgery, there are many factors that should go into your decision to proceed. What procedure to have done, where to have the surgery performed, which doctor to choose for your surgery and the result you can reasonably expect should come into play. As with any surgery, you should also consider the risks, in this case the risks of liposuction. You need to remember that liposuction is a surgical procedure, requiring general anesthesia, invasive entrance to and manipulation of your body. The technique of liposuction requires fluid, which often includes an anesthetic called lidocaine, to be pumped under the skin of the area to be liposuctioned. Epinephrine is also added to this fluid to slow bleeding, and then the area is cut into and a hollow instrument called a cannula is stuck into the area in question. This cannula is attached to a strong vacuum that sucks the fatty material out of the area that needs the removal procedure completed. This process can carry risks. A very high percentage of surgeries have no complications whatsoever, but occasionally there can be problems. Statistics show that deadly complications occur .0002 of the time for all surgeries. For instance, there were five deaths from liposuction procedures in New York City between the years of 1993-1998. The patients were reported to have died from such problems as fluid overload (from the fluid used to numb and prepare the area), low blood pressure from the lidocaine added to the fluid and blood clots. Other deaths over the years have been caused by interactions between the lidocaine anesthetic and other medications the patients were taking. Obviously, it is crucial that you tell your plastic surgeon what medications, if any, you are taking. Obviously, death is a rare occurrence with liposuction, so lets discuss side effects. Side effects such as bruising, swelling, misshapen areas can happen after having liposuction. There is also the possibility of not getting the outcome you expected and needing further surgery to correct the issues. Temporary numbness in the surgical area and scarring are also common risks of liposuction. Before you choose to have liposuction, make sure you have considered the potential risks of liposuction carefully. Discuss the risks associated with liposuction with your plastic surgeon and make an informed decision. Ricardo de Silva is with PlasticSurgeonPractices.com - a directory of plastic surgeons. Free Medical Books

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Richard_Romando] Richard Romando Books are still a primary source of knowledge, even with the advent of the Internet and other methods of research. Books in all subjects are being released in revised editions to keep up with the changes and newer research being done in various fields. One such field that requires continuous knowledge is the field of medicine. There are stores that specialize in medical books and stock the latest editions of all medical books when they are released. Such stores are the ones that stock for medical schools or colleges. However, most of the medical books that are released are expensive. Although going to a librarys reference section is a good option to shelling out big bucks for the medical books, it can be time-consuming. Although a long shot, it is worth it to search online for free medical books. Some sites do provide free reference material for qualified and certified doctors. The doctors would need to register with these websites by providing their basic details and qualifications. Since it is free, not many topics are available. However, many of the websites do have a number of articles, journals and other reference materials that might be of some use. Online medical libraries are the latest craze, as they house an exhaustive selection of medical reference books. Most of these libraries are free of charge and all the professionals in the field of medicine, such as doctors, interns, nurses and students, can make use of these reference materials. Websites such as www.freebooks4doctors.com and www.haitimedical.com provide access to free medical books online. These sites require the users to register as members, and most of the sites also send articles and journal stuff regularly to the members email addresses. Searching on the World Wide Web can produce many such websites that provide free reading material for aspiring doctors and nurses, as well as practicing professionals. The other option to browsing on the Internet would be the college and school libraries that house all the books related to the syllabus for all semesters, as well as other reference material. Although this is also a free way to get access to all the medical books, its more time-consuming. Should Your “Career Smoke Alarm” Be Going Off?

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

By William Werksman Often times, even the most sophisticated senior level employees can miss the warning signals that would otherwise trigger your career smoke alarm. In the day to day struggle to keep your company goals and objectives in sight, it is easy to allow the batteries in your smoke alarm to go down. How often should you check them and when do you know the alarm should be ringing loudly? Here are a few questions to reflect upon that will assist in this analysis: 1. In the last quarter or at least in the past 6 months, has my supervisor or manager spoken to me about my goals and objectives as an employee? It is critical for your supervisor or department manager to take an active role in your development as a team member. Managers should make it their responsibility to take the initiative to make certain their team or department members know what is expected of them in the short term and long term. Goals and objectives for each member should be laid out in plain and easily understood pathways for you to follow. If these are not being provided by your current supervisor or manager, you need to have a heart to heart talk with that person to make certain you are on the same page. Not being on the same page should trigger the alarm bells. 2. Do I have all the resources to complete my work objectives and goals? Many times, in companies where times are starting to get VERY tough and business is on a major down turn, the resources for fully and successfully completing your work objectives become suddenly scarce or difficult to come by. If you start to sense that this is the case, make inquires to your boss or department head. Find out if it is simply an issue of poor allocation or something more dire for the companys future. Should you be concerned that you were once able to fly out and meet clients for direct sales calls and business development and now each and every trip must be validated with a signed contract? Yes, because it takes money to make money and when things get so tight that standard business development trips are no longer in the budget, it time to start thinking about the root causes. If you, as a valued employee, do not have the resources or assistance of the company to complete the objectives outlined by your manager or group leader, then maybe its time to consider another career location. 3. Can I see a clear path to career advancement at this company? Take a look beyond the simple pay increase equation. Take a look at your co-workers and colleagues. Are they particularly interested in their careers or simply there punching the clock and taking the paycheck hoping their efforts are enough to keep them employed till retirement age. Do you see the company responding to the efforts you have made that are above and beyond the standard job description in your personnel file? Take a hard look at the company as an outsider? What would you see if you were interviewing there for the first time? Every person is responsible for making the decision to stay and flourish or simply be left behind. Make certain that you keep track of the comments and feedback received in your last review. Make certain you address the good and bad in those review and appraisals so that you are at the very least, on the same wavelength and making serious and meaningful strides towards accomplishing the goals and objectives set forth for yourself. If you do accomplish those you should rightfully see the reward, the advancement in both responsibility and salary. If you are unable to look at your boss and understand how he got there, them maybe you need to do some career evaluation. Career paths should be well defined inside a well oiled company. Each worker should be able to know the chances for career advancement as well as the risks for failure. While the latter is generally more obvious, the ability to clearly see the path for career advancement is something every professional should be keenly aware of. 4. Do I have a mentor/coach or someone else at the company that is interested in my development? Yes, this can be your immediate boss or supervisor but often times this is another person or even a co-worker that provides you with salient advice regarding your career and work activities. Sometimes, it is a person that is older and possibly more senior than you in terms of their tenure with the organization. Someone that you can go to on a confidential basis and talk with regarding all the uncertainties you have with your career and possible career options. A coach or mentor can provide you with a sounding board for concerns, for sharing the minor and major victories that are part of a successful career path. Be certain that you have someone like this at your office. 5. Are my opinions valued or ideas taken seriously by the organization? This is perhaps the loudest alarm that should be heard. If you are not being taken seriously at work or if your opinions or initiatives are consistently rejected or not even put forward for senior management, then it is definitely time for a career change. Every employee and contributing member of an organization should have the ability to have their voice heard and opinion addressed. Having your initiatives summarily dismissed or shelved for another time is unacceptable and at the very least should warrant a long discussion with your boss or immediate supervisor. If you are again summarily dismissed or pushed to the back corner, listen closely, the career smoke alarm is blaring, head for the exit sign. These are some of the warning signs you should readily hear and recognize. Often times, they do not all come at once. Many times they are subtle and couched in passive addressed messages. But, have not doubt, if you find any of the prior points are part of your current work atmosphere, perhaps the career smoke alarm is already going off. Check those batteries frequently, or at the very least every six months. Its always better to have fresh and alert batteries than be a victim. Competency Based Interviews - 6 Steps to Success!

Saturday, December 29th, 2007

By Martin Haworth Competency based interviews are intended to get the best from you, the candidate, whilst also fulfilling the needs of the organisation to get the very best person for the job. There are some easy steps to make the most of yourself and have a much better chance of success. Prepare well, but keep it sensible As long as you know the job you are going for, ask for details of what you will be measured against. Ask for a set of competencies. Ask for a job description. This sets you up to succeed, not just because you are better informed, but also because you have asked - which will impress the decision-makers, before you even get there! Get Creative Here is the time to use your own experiences to create ’stories’ which you can use in the actual interview. These ’stories’ are real scenarios that you have been a part of, which over a period of days and weeks beforehand, you write up. Maybe you will have 20+ initial ideas. Leverage! Take the very best scenarios and write them out, bullet points first. Then flesh them out, whilst referring carefully to the competencies you’ve been given. It is amazing how you can ‘tune-in’ your scenario to include many, if not all of the competencies. And if you can’t fit them all in, there will be a use for them - later! Practice By reading through your scenarios (and by now you should not have more than six or seven) you will familiarise yourself with the contents, so well, that they will become second nature - even in the scary experience of an interview. In the Interview There are some tactics in here too! Using your scenarios make just three key points about what you’ve been asked. Make them relevant and the right ‘weight’. Not too long or too short. After that, leave space for them to ask more - that’s what they are listening for.Say ‘I’ a lot - they want to know what your personal involvement and experience was, not ‘the team’ or ‘they’.Have fun - whilst not contrived, smile and make some simple jokes, if you feel comfortable with that - they want to employ happy as well as capable people. Can’t answer? That’s fine. Make sure that you reflect on your shortcomings by saying things like, ‘It’s one of the first things I want to develop in my next job - if you did your stuff on your scenarios and your competencies well enough, you will have covered 90% of the bases well and you’ll be forgiven for not being ‘perfect’. If you are really stumped - say so!Ask questions - relevant, about their culture, focus on developing you, opportunities - the positive ‘peopley’ things (remember it’s your chance to see if you want to work with them!).Also ask about current issues they may be facing - you did do your homework on them, didn’t you? Strong Ending! Keep the whole thing light, even as you leave at the end. Have a conversation in general terms - about anything! Do make sure that you ask them some things that are about them - they will love it if you ask them some open (what, how, when, where, who) general questions about your new job! About something nice in the building or their clothes - take as it comes and do what feels comfortable! Remember that competencies are there to help you and they provide a guide-map for your competency based interview success! 2005 Martin Haworth is a Business and Management Coach. What Makes an Aeroplane Fly?

Friday, December 28th, 2007

By John Gibb One thing that you really need to understand before you can build a toy plane that actually flies is what it is that makes planes fly in the first place. Luckily, with a little explanation, the basic scientific principles of plane flight arent too difficult to understand. The key to flight, understandably, is the wings. Instead of flapping their wings like birds do, however, planes propel themselves forwards using an engine in much the same way a car does, and then rely on the shape of their wings to slowly lift them off the ground. But why do a planes big, flat wings lift it off the ground? The answer is all to do with how the air travels over and under the wings. A planes wings are flatter on the bottom and more rounded on the top, which means that air takes longer to travel over the wings than under them. The higher air speed under the wings means that there is always more space for air to travel under than over effectively, the air is being forced to go under the wings. When the plane is moving fast, enough air is being forced under the wings that the plane takes off. Once the plane is in the air, it can either glide using its wings and a little forward power, turn up the forward power to ascend, or turn it off to descend. A plane can also steer left and right using a rudder on the air, much the same way as a boat uses one in water, and go up and down faster by tilting its nose. All of these choices are the ones you see represented on a typical toy plane remote control, and aside from the added computer-controlled navigation and radar systems to check the locations of other planes in a real plane, they are pretty much the same controls that you would find there. The Easiest Weight Loss Ever

Thursday, December 27th, 2007

By AJ Stamp Lets talk about the easiest weight loss ever. The easiest form of weight loss would require no work, no thought, no extra effortsounds good doesnt it? Easy weight loss is possibleusing the power of your mind. You may not believe it, but your mind is a powerful tool that is responsible for your success or lack of success in life. If you believe that you’ll never be able to lose weight, then you are setting yourself up for failure. Youve no doubt heard the saying what the mind believes can be conceived. Its a true statement. If you believe that you are a thin person, then your subconscious mind will do everything in its power to make it happen. Saying positive thoughts to yourself is not enough though; you must believe it. And you must feel the emotions that go along with what you want. How would you feel if you were at your goal weight? Hold on to that feeling, and tell yourself that you are happy you are at your ideal weight. Positive affirmations work best when they are said in the present tense. So how do you make your subconscious mind work for you? Hypnosis is one option that works wonders, and positive affirmations can make a difference also. Hypnosis works by reprogramming your subconscious mind to believe you can and will meet your goals. Hypnosis can be performed by a therapist, or you can purchase hypnosis sessions on CD. Positive affirmations are statements that you make to yourself on a daily basis. Look at yourself in a mirror and say positive statements that are in the present tense, such as I’m so happy that I’m at my ideal weight. Although you may not believe yourself at first, after time it’ll become much easier. If you cant afford hypnosis sessions, and you keep forgetting to do your positive affirmations, there is a simpler solution. Download a track onto your mp3 player. Not just any track, but one that is laced with subliminal messages. Subliminal messages work in the same way that hypnosis works. These messages are heard by your subconscious mind, and the more often your mind hears them, the more your mind believes them. This is the easiest way to make your mind work for you; you don’t have to put in any effort besides for pushing the play button. Whatever your diet and exercise plan, you can achieve your goals faster with the power of your mind. When your mind is in sync with your goals, you may achieve the easiest weight loss ever. What Is The Best Phone Card For Calling From…To

Monday, December 24th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Albert_Popov]Albert Popov This is the most frequently asked question about cheap international calling cards. Remember: you will scarcely get a satisfactory answer from the outside. Even if you ask Yahoo! Answers, you will receive ten various offers. And a final choice will be yours as always. I offer you the following way. Firstly, search for a good company selling phone cards on-line. Secondly, make a suitable request through calling card search box on a selected web site. In reply a seller will offer you, as a rule, a few phone cards for given destination and information on each card, including nominal prices, rates, options, extra fees, etc. And thirdly, the rest of you need to do is to solve a small task of selecting with information available. Anybody cannot do it, instead you. For a short-term, if you intend to make a lot of long calls, select the cards with the lowest rates. Usually they have a maintenance fee. The maintaining services allow you to trace phone calls. This fee will be taken from your phone card balance every one or two weeks. The more weeks, the more money you lose. An optimal duration of this short-term period is 3 - 12 weeks. For exact estimating the period for any given card, visit http://www.evocallus.com/estimate.html. For a long-term and if you make phone calls just once in a while, select the cards without maintenance fee. These cards usually have higher rates, but you do not have to worry about your phone card balance going down if you do not call. You can choose phone cards even with connection fee. Sometimes they have the lowest rates. But at first, estimate this card with special tool on http://www.evocallus.com/estimcon.html. The lowest rates benefit may be illusory. Pay attention if a card has local or toll free access numbers. Rates are usually higher in the last case. However, in the former case you need to call using only given local access number. Pay attention to a rounding period as well. The higher this period and the more frequently you call, the more money you lose. Calls made from or to cell phones are priced at a higher rate due to the extra technology involved in completing the connection. If you place a phone call from a payphone, surcharges will apply by company owned public phone service. Read card’s terms carefully. That will do. Now you can answer the main question competently. The Environment Diet

Monday, December 24th, 2007

By Julia Havey I learned something last night reading my daughter’s homework assignment. It was for her personal finance class and they had to read an article by sales expert Jeffrey Gitmor titled “The environment you create will dictate your success. When I say success environment what do YOU think about? He is NOT referring to the retirement destination of luxury living as a mark of success environment but rather “your surroundings; both mental and physical” Your mental environment begins with a positive attitude and grows to your acceptance of new things, new people and new ideas — your mental willingness to see the bright side of everything and your mental ability to turn obstacles into opportunities. If your environment isn’t set up for success, it is YOUR responsibility to make it a better one. I LOVE this article! Now, like most things in life, it got me thinking about weight loss and how what I just read could apply to our journey. It applies perfectly! If you live in a chaotic environment, your life will be chaotic. If you live in a messy environment, your life will be messy. If you live amongst clutter and unfinished projects, YOU will be just another piece of clutter-filled unfinished junk with a lot of potential but no results. Ouch! Hey, the truth hurts, but sometimes its just the kick in the butt that we need to kick it in gear! So what are the truths we can apply to weight loss? If I asked you what success meant to you, what would you think of? WRONG! It is NOT reaching a specific measure on the scale, yet that is what universally comes to mind when thinking of a successful weight-loss journey. How many people, including yourself, do you know who have lost weight, been successful on their weight-loss journey reaching their goal weight only to gain it all back and then some? HOW is that success? WHY should we continue to measure our success by the one tool that continually hinders real success? I am talking about the scale and pounds. The true environment of success for a lasting, successful and healthful weight-loss journey is based on the actions of healthy living! A life that consists of adequate daily water intake, a healthy well-balanced diet, regular exercise, an active schedule and a positive attitude are essential for lasting weight loss. If you bring to your weight-loss journey an old and tired defeatist attitude — “this isnt going to work” — you will be right. If you think that you can keep doing what you have always done, eat what you have always eaten, but in this case somehow realize different results, you are only kidding yourself. If you think you can get to a predetermined measure on the scale and then revert back to your old habits, you are going to get whiplash as the yo-yo string reels you back to your starting weight. While a healthy diet is one aspect of this journey, and certainly pounds lost is a goal, who you become along the way is the real measure of success. The real goal should be becoming a person who has a healthy lifestyle, who exhibits healthy actions at all times and embraces health not for pounds lost but for the gains in preventing future illness and disease, for movement, flexibility and stamina, for a zest for living. That is who you should strive to become and what your new environment should be like. Best of all, it will help you lose weight, too! In my book “The Vice Busting Diet” (http://www.ViceBustingDiet.com), I talk about the need to get rid of clutter — cleaning up your house, finishing projects that are lying around undone, finishing what you start, etc. I cant tell you how many people write me and ask what that possibly has to do with losing weight and I will tell you what I tell them it has everything to do with it. Some Great Trout Fishing Tips

Saturday, December 22nd, 2007

By Trevor Kugler As the weather begins to get warmer and we start thinking about things like fishing, many anglers pursue trout in the early spring. Although there are many ways to catch these fish I wanted to go over a few tips that may increase you catch rate. I personally find the spring to be a difficult time to catch trout, especially as the water begins to rise and rivers become high and muddy. If you can catch the rivers before the high water, you’ll be okay; otherwise you may be reserved to lake fishing. Either way, here are some tips to help you catch more trout Use Gang Hooks - If you don’t know what gang hooks are, they are simply two small hooks tied in tandem. This enables the angler to present a worm or minnow in an incredibly natural way. Gang hooks also enable the angler to present double the dough bait (such as Powerbait). Think about it, don’t you think that having two balls of Powerbait floating off of the bottom would be better than just one? As The Current Increases, Increase The Length Of Your Rod - In the spring when the water is higher than normal I use my six foot ultra light rod, rather than my four footer. The extra length makes fishing in heavy current that much more effective. The heavier the flow of water, the longer fishing rod, that’s a rule I live by. If A Bait Isn’t Working, Change It - This is especially true for those of you fishing lakes with some sort of bait, including Powerbait. If you’ve been fishing maggots for an hour without a bite, change to worms or Powerbait. If blue Powerbait hasn’t produced a bite in an hour, change to a different color. Making a small change can make all the difference. Have A Little Patience - I realize that having a little patience is no great realization in the sport of fishing, but it’s still important. Fish can’t be caught on every cast or even every time we go out fishing. Give a certain technique or lure a half hour or forty five minutes, and then switch to a different one. Dont be changing things up every five minutes. Give things a chance to work and then change. Clean You Hands Before Baiting Up - The human scent isn’t appealing to fish at all. Fish have a tremendous sense of smell and if they smell something foreign on your bait or lure, they are much less apt to attempt to eat it. I like to grab a handful of grass and rub it in my hands. This covers the scent of my hands, and I believe, increases the amount of bites I get. Cleaning your hands is especially true if you are a smoker (as I used to be). Beginning to employ these tips will increase the amount of bites that you get while fishing, it’s as simple as that. The tips will help with the bites, but the catching is up to you. You’re the one that actually has to set the hook, and reel the fish in. The bottom line is that these tips will, at the very least, help you get more bites. Good luck and good fishing! Respect Privacy

Saturday, December 22nd, 2007

By Julia Jones Before individuals come into a relationship each one has a past history. They have past memories that are in the form of letters, letters of their first love, cards, and year books and so on. Many couples when they come together into a new relationship like to keep their reminiscences of the past in some or the other form. These collections have a special meaning to each one and have sentiments attached to it. Usually the opposite sex partner does not realize the importance of these collection and do not consider it valuable at all. On the other hand the owner of these belongings has a special meaning for these and is very sentimental about it. Therefore it is important for their mates to respect the partners sentiments. Special care should be taken not to hurt the partner with satire. HE or she should never be made fun off and consider the behavior childish. There are couples who even make a grave mistake of suspecting their partner. They dig out the box that has been kept as a secret by the mate and search for what is present no more. They try to look for an opportunity to read those letters out of fear of being cheated or just curiosity. Which is wrong? Just like consumers privacy, employee privacy, personal privacy too is necessary. However it is normal to suspect a person if something is kept as a secret but one thing should be borne in mind that true relationship depends on trust and faith. Moreover each one of us has the right to privacy. An individual person can have things completely to oneself without others interfering or having a look at it, even the life partners. All of us require some space and should be given that required liberty. One should respect his or her partners privacy. Give space to your partner and give time so that your partner will on his or her own will show those collections to you. At times what happens is that people hesitate to show their stuff to their partners due to embarrassment or fear of not being understood correctly. And as a result do not make an effort to show these collections of the past. As the soul mate you should never suspect your partner and try to be neutral towards that secret box owned by your partner. You should not show any curiosity towards it or make your partner uncomfortable about those items that he or she cherishes.
