Hummingbirds are nectivores and insectivores; approximately 90% of their diet comes from nectar and 10% from arthropods (flies, wasps, spiders, beetles, and ants). If you watch closely, you will sometimes notice them picking insects out of spider webs or off leaves, bark, etc. What is the composition of nectar? The sugar in flower nectar is primarily sucrose, like that of white sugar. So don’t use honey or artificial sweeteners (illogical says Spock, but some people do). Many of the flowers hummingbirds feed upon have a sugar concentration of approximately 20%. How do I make my own nectar? To imitate the natural flower sugar concentration of 20%, use a solution of 1:4. This won’t give you an exact concentration of 20% because in reality sugar and water molecules have different atomic weights…yada yada yada…which means you can’t simply divide to get your percentage by volume alone. Anyway, 1:4 will actually give you an 18.6% sugar concentration. Close enough, and the hummingbirds won’t be saying, “Where’s the other 1.4%?!” As an example, you can mix 1 cup of sugar with 4 cups water. If you only have one feeder and don’t want to store leftover mix (fresh is always better), then use 1/4 cup sugar to 1 cup of water. What if I want to make the nectar stronger? Well research has shown that when given the option, hummingbirds preferred higher concentrations of sugar in their nectar, up to 50%. But I would stick with 20%. It will be easier to keep your feeders clean which is essential. Feeders will be less sticky and the chance of the solution fermenting or growing fungus (mold) is less. The mold that grows in hummingbird feeders can give hummingbirds a fatal tongue infection. What if I want to make the nectar weaker? The more diluted the nectar, the more consumption of nectar is needed to satisfy a hummingbird’s energy requirements. Weaker concentrations are less attractive to hummers & you’ll find they may just stop coming to your feeder to find a better, concentrated source. So stick to 1:4. What about adding red dye to my nectar to attract hummingbirds? Not necessary. There still debating this one, but artificial colors may be harmful to hummingbirds. So don’t add any. If you want to add some color to your feeder, use red ribbon or tape instead of dyes to attract them. Once hummingbirds start visiting, they’ll know where to return and the extra color isn’t needed. How often should I clean my hummingbird feeder? You should clean your feeders at least every 3 days in hot weather and 6-7 days in cool weather. Otherwise fermentation can occur and mold & bacteria will grow, which can be fatal to hummingbirds. In addition, hummers won’t like the taste of the nectar & stop coming to your feeders. Follow these steps to keep your hummingbird feeder clean and your hummingbirds healthy: 1. Empty reservoir and rinse in a mixture of hot water & vinegar 2. Add rock salt or uncooked rice grains to the rinse & shake to dislodge mold (black scum) 3. Empty feeder and rinse again thoroughly with hot water 4. History says it is a nations moral fortitude alone that keeps it at the top. Obviously there are those who dont believe this and there is even more who think it is pure folly just to entertain such an archaic thought. Throughout history the strongest nations were often brought down by a mere device. To wit, ancient Babylon seemed impregnable with its massive walls that could hold six chariots side by side on the tops of the wall. By a simple device, the diverting of the waters of the Euphrates River the Persians were able to wade in under the walls of the city and bring the inhabitants to their knees. The Persians prided themselves in their power to swarm over a city with an overwhelming army and flatten all resistance. If a city of one hundred thousand people was faced with an army of millions often they gave up without a fight. Again a simple device called the Greek Phalanx pulled the plug for Persia. A simple formation of tiered spearmen effectively ripped up the blitzkrieg like armies of Persia. Superior strategies and the brilliant tactics of Alexander the Great laid waste to the Persians and for a time it would seem that no one could topple the mighty Greek empire. Enter Rome with an army of superbly trained men. A single Roman soldier was trained to hold off up to twelve men at a time. The idea of training men for warfare reached its peak at that time in history and remains to this day. Rome eventually fell from its perch but not because its famed armies lost their punch. It fell because it could not withstand its own success. With material goods in abundance and freedom to do anything that entered the imagination, the Romans gave themselves to the hot pursuit of pleasures and indulgence. Romes reputation for licentiousness became a stink throughout the world. Within Rome the shredding moral fabric traversed the entire social spectra affecting Roman citizens from the lowest to the highest. The unseen substance of moral power still holds center stage in any assessment of a nations strength. It cant be readily seen or handled much like air but everyone knows what happens when air begins to rise to the level of a category five hurricane or a tornado. For America it is obviously a combination of all these elements that gave us the idea that we are a superpower. Preachers and prophets are accorded equal status with used car salesmen and anyone who thinks times were better before is taken for a sentimental nostalgia buff. Being cool is nothing but another word for aloof. America is aloof if it thinks that moral power is only a nostalgic allusion to our past or a pious preachers platitude that has no more practical value than the long forgotten debut of the hula hoop. In fact, our moral strength is all weve got! Faith in God, love for our country and its founding principles and the love of our neighbor are not nostalgic niceties to look back on. They are the only hope of a reasonably good future we have, and thats a big Cajun guarantee. Trees that flower and bear fruit need more water and can tolerate wet conditions better but conifers like the White Pine prefer to have the soil dry out between watering. My problem lies in the common understanding of eternal life. Specifically when does one obtain everlasting life. Jesus in his interaction with the rich young man Matt 19:16-26 and Mark 10:17-23 instructs him on how to obtain eternity by living a righteous and obedient life. The young man is on board with what Jesus tells him until he is instructed to give away all his wealth. The young man goes away in great distress at this pronouncement. The message here is not that it is wrong to be wealthy as wealth is a gift from God. It is not wrong to be rich, it is wrong to misuse the gift of wealth or worse to idolize money. Money is NOT the root of all evil. The LOVE of money is the root of all kinds of evil. 1 Tim 6:6-10 Now keep in mind, money can be anything. Anything we put above our relationship with God is an idol. In the story of the rich young ruler it was money that he worshipped and was unwilling to give up. It could be job, possessions, or even family and friends. Money however is not what this article is about. Eternal life, more specifically when it begins and why this matters. The original 300 workout is brutal, and there are two ways we can modify it. First, by using the same exercises and decreasing the reps.
